American Powerball
U.S. Powerball is one of the most popular and biggest lotteries in the United States. Each ticket costs $2, and players choose five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls and one number from 1 to 26 for the red “Powerball.”
Players will hit the jackpot if they pick all the correct numbers and combinations. In other words, your ticket must match all six numbers on the white and red balls in the correct combination. Smaller prizes can be won if a player guesses multiple combinations of winning numbers. Players can win $4 if they guess only the red Powerball number.
On November 7, 2022, U.S. Powerball offered a record lottery prize of over $1.9 billion, the largest jackpot in the game’s history. Moreover, the $2.04 billion Prize (the final jackpot amount after all ticket sales were factored in) was won with a ticket purchased in California, making it the largest lottery payout ever!
U.S. Powerball is not accustomed to some of the biggest jackpots in history, with three players winning the second-largest pot of $1.586 billion on January 13, 2016. On March 27, 2019, a single winner took home a prize of $768.4 billion, another one of the largest jackpots ever won.
Mega Millions
Played in 45 U.S. states, Mega Millions comes close to U.S. Powerball in offering some of the largest lottery jackpots. While U.S. Powerball holds the world title of the largest lottery in history, Mega Millions is a strong competitor, offering big prizes.
As with U.S. Powerball, the ticket buyer selects five numbers from 1 to 70 for the white balls and one from 1 to 25 for the gold Mega ball. Matching all five balls and the “Mega” ball earns you the top Prize, while smaller wins are paid out for smaller combinations on the winning numbers.
Mega Millions was the lottery that played the second jackpot in history. Break the $1 billion mark when 1.537 October 23, the winner took home a pot of 2018 billion dollars. A single ticket holder won the world’s largest lottery prize.
Staying above the billion dollar mark, a lotto club for four based in Michigan won the Mega Millions jackpot of $1.05 billion. The group purchased a single ticket for the drawing, which took place on January 22, 2021.
Again, on July 29, 2022, Mega Millions offered another huge jackpot of 1.337 billion won by two players on a single ticket. After deductions, the winners received a lump sum payout of 780.5 million dollars!
EuroMillions
Although European lotteries have yet to hit the billion-dollar mark, their biggest jackpots cannot be ignored! EuroMillions reached a maximum capitalization of €230 million on July 8, 2022, but didn’t win then. However, the biggest EuroMillions win was in the U.K. by a single ticket holder who snapped up a €230 million jackpot on July 19, 2022.
The winning ticket matched all five numbers plus two Lucky Stars numbers. The previous U.K. record holders were a British couple who won a prize of €210 million in May of the same year. The second largest EuroMillions jackpot was €2021 million, won on 220 October 15. Between 2012 and 2022, 10 jackpots were won, from 230 million to 190 million euros.
The Euromillions game, launched in France in 2004, is played in eight other European countries. They are Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria and the United Kingdom. Players choose five numbers from 1 to 50 plus two Lucky Stars numbers from 1 to 12.
Euro Jackpot
Another famous European transnational lottery, Eurojackpot, known for its large jackpots, was first launched in 2012. Participating countries include the following:
Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
The jackpot starts at €10 million and can grow to €120 million, with players choosing five numbers out of 50 plus two more numbers from 1 to 12. The largest jackpot of €120 million was won on May 20, 2022, in Germany. The same amount was won in Denmark on July 22, 2022.
The main payouts range between €61 million and €110 million between 2014 and 2022, with most winning tickets purchased in Germany. Eurojackpot rules changed the limit from €90 million to €120 million in March 2022.
