If you’ve ever walked past your crawlspace and noticed a strange odor, you might be dealing with stink bugs. These shield-shaped insects are known for the strong smell they release when disturbed, and once they find their way inside, they can be hard to remove without help from a trusted pest service. In Tumwater, stink bugs are especially common during the cooler months, when they sneak indoors looking for warmth and shelter.

How to Recognize a Stink Bug

The most common type you’ll see in Washington is the brown marmorated stink bug. They’re about the size of a dime, shaped like a shield, and usually brown with a mottled pattern. When crushed or threatened, they release a smell often compared to strong herbs like cilantro or coriander. Some people find it unbearable, and the odor can linger for hours.

Inside crawlspaces, stink bugs often hide in wall gaps, under insulation, or around floor beams. During warm winter days, you may spot them crawling near vents or windows as they wake up from dormancy. Even though they don’t bite or damage wood, their smell and large numbers make them unwelcome visitors.

Why Stink Bugs Love Tumwater Crawlspaces

Crawlspaces provide the perfect environment for stink bugs during fall and winter. Tumwater’s cool, damp climate makes these spaces a cozy spot for bugs to overwinter. They usually enter in late summer or early fall through small cracks and gaps. Once inside, they hibernate until spring, when they head outdoors to feed and lay eggs.

Some common entry points include:

  • Cracks in the foundation
  • Gaps around crawlspace vents
  • Loose siding or trim
  • Openings around pipes or wires

Without sealing these areas, stink bugs will return year after year to the same hiding spots.

The Risks of Ignoring Stink Bugs

While stink bugs don’t chew wood or spread disease, that doesn’t mean they’re harmless. Problems that can come with an infestation include:

  • Strong odors that seep into floors, walls, and fabrics
  • Stains left behind when stink bugs are crushed
  • Other pests, like rodents or wasps, are being drawn to your crawlspace
  • Larger numbers are returning each season, creating ongoing issues
  • Damage to plants and gardens in spring when stink bugs re-emerge

The longer you wait, the bigger the problem can become.

Stink Bug Eggs and Reproduction

One of the biggest challenges with stink bugs is how fast they reproduce. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs in one season. The eggs are tiny, barrel-shaped, and usually found in clusters of 20–30. They’re often light green or pale yellow and are commonly laid on the undersides of leaves or outdoor surfaces.

If left unchecked, those eggs hatch within a few days, leading to dozens of new nymphs that eventually grow into adults. That’s why stopping stink bugs early makes such a difference.

How to Get Rid of Stink Bugs

The best approach to stink bug control usually involves several steps:

  • Inspection – Look for entry points and hiding places around the crawlspace.
  • Exclusion – Seal cracks, repair siding, and install vent screens to keep stink bugs out.
  • Careful Removal – Use a vacuum with a disposable bag, sweep them gently, or drop them into soapy water. Avoid crushing them, or the smell will spread.
  • Professional Treatment – A pest expert can apply safe, targeted treatments in areas where stink bugs gather.

Preventing Future Infestations

To keep stink bugs from coming back, here are some simple prevention tips:

  • Seal cracks around windows, doors, and your home’s foundation
  • Install fine mesh screens on attic and crawlspace vents
  • Replace worn weatherstripping
  • Keep firewood and clutter away from the house
  • Use yellow outdoor bulbs instead of bright white ones, since they attract fewer insects

Final Thoughts

Stink bugs may not cause the same damage as termites or rodents, but their odor, eggs, and sheer numbers can quickly become a nuisance in your Tumwater crawlspace. By sealing entry points, staying alert to eggs, and working with a reliable pest service when needed, you can keep your home comfortable and bug-free all year long.
