Trail running is a fun and simple sport that does not require much gear. One can get by with just a pair of running shoes. As Steven Rindner mentions, as one finds themselves to be more invested in trail running, they must prioritize wearing the right clothes to improve their experience on the trails. Wearing the appropriate clothes for a trail run would make a big difference in the comfort and performance of the runners.

While trail running, one should try their best to wear clothes made from breathable and fast-drying fabrics. Such materials typically work with the body to regulate one’s temperature by effectively managing sweat. Most trail runners tend to check the weather multiple times before deciding what to wear, but still have apprehensions. Layering with multiple lightweight pieces makes it easy to adapt to changes in terrain and landscape conditions.
For remote locations, longer runs or harsh conditions, it would be better to bring an extra layer, even if one thinks that they will not need it. It would be a good idea to carry a waterproof jacket with a hood and taped seams, in addition to a hat and gloves for safety. Even though such items might not be required for a casual run through the woods on a summer afternoon, they can be very important in mountainous or exposed regions where the weather may rapidly shift.
Moisture-wicking base layers, like tights, shorts, and tops, would pull sweat away from the skin and help it evaporate. This shall make it easier for the runners to stay cool when they are overheating, and prevent the clammy, cold feeling of sweat. As running generates a lot of sweat, trail runners should consider investing in dedicated running waterproofs that offer higher breathability than regular waterproofs. They are also made with lighter, more flexible fabrics, which makes them easier to pack and move in.
Base layers for clothing made for running are typically made from synthetic fibers, like polyester, or merino wool. Such synthetic fibers are able to wick moisture faster, and dry more quickly. On the other hand, merino wool is naturally breathable and warmer when damp. Such fabrics can be worn throughout the year, even though synthetics are generally preferred in summer and merino in winter. For extra warmth, runners may wear a windproof jacket or gilet. Gilet is basically a sleeveless, lightweight jacket or vest designed for running, and can provide an extra layer of warmth and protection from the elements without restricting movement.
As Steven Rindner points out, in cold conditions, runners should try to layer with a thick base layer or a lightweight fleece jacket which adds insulation while still allowing moisture and excess heat to escape.
In addition to the right clothing, buying appropriate shoes for trail runs is also very important. Proper trail running shoes shall provide much better grip, structure and protection than road running shoes and shall be designed specifically to meet the demands of off-road terrain.
